Marans Breeding Program

Update on our Marans breeding.  Due to present economy and job situations we had to with regret cut back the number of  birds.  The Goldens have been sold to a gentleman that plans to work with them.  We have kept the blues and will continue to work with conformity and egg color.  I did add a trio of White Marans this winter that look great so far all 3 have the feathers on outside of legs.  Our breeding will focus on the French standards as there are at this time, no agreed upon american standards.  I pick the french over english for the feathered legs.

Marans is a great utility breed.  Marans is spelled in the single sense.  Marans are known for their very dark chocolate color eggs.  It is publish in Ian Fleming's novels about James Bond that it was James Bond's favorite egg.  Being a huge James Bond movie fan I had to have some chickens that laid these eggs and how convenient I live in a county with the same name as the author.  Many of our egg customers buy from us for the dark eggs.  The claim is that the eggs are richer in flavor.  I can not tell the difference between our white, brown or blue eggs.
