The Coop

This page is dedicated to our housing builds.  Anyone who is keeping poultry or think about it is always looking for ideas to make clean comfortable housing and easy on the keeper.  Here is my attempt.

.
Our coop's design is based on a plan I purchased from McMurray's Hatchery Catalogue and modified to better suit our needs.   My biggest obstacle was building on a relatively steep hill.  There are 3 nice elements to this design.   One, there is plenty of storage area just inside the side door.  Two, the floor under the roosting area is sectioned.  Three, the clean-out doors are in the back.

Rooster Condos going up!

Didn't want to put roosters not pen up with hen tethered to a barrel, so I came up with a more human pen.  Every day I turn one rooster out to the yard for the day to wander around and get fresh grass.  Designed the back at a height so the keeper doesn't have to bend over for chores!  I use old feed bags to line under each roosting area in condos.  Those areas accessible from small horizontal doors in back.  The condos are made from 2x2 framing on 2x4 base.  Between living quarters there is chicken wire to separate occupants.   Each living quarter 2' x 4' with dining area and roost.  Run is 4' x 10' including area under condo.  Plenty of room for a stag and more than most keepers give.  When I am done I will be able to house 6 boys off hens.

Homemade Nesting Box

I made two four hole nesting boxes.  The the two boxes are back to back in the new addition.  Ordered the plastic nest box bottoms to make cleaning easier.
